What is it Like to Attend Moravian College Samantha is a current senior at Moravian College. She is majoring in mathematics, and specializes in calculus tutoring, geometry tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Moravian College: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Samantha: Moravian College is in the old picturesque town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where quaint shops line the streets. Theres a constant police presence on both the north and south campus of the school, so I feel safe all the time. I live on south campus, and its always quiet. The school provides a shuttle bus to transport the students between campuses, and it allows students to get from one campus to another in about ten minutes. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Samantha:Every employee at the school readily makes themselves available for the students. I have never felt so cared for than I have at this college. Extra help is easy to access and academic support has been wonderful. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Samantha:I have only lived in the suites located on south campus, and I have nothing but fantastic things to say! I love being able to have my own room, and sharing the suite with some great girls. There are tons of different meal choices, and the school is incredibly accommodating for students with special food needs. The school also has many clubs and events that allow the students to socialize with others. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Samantha:I dont believe that any one major or program is best represented or supported. The school does a great job of supporting all fields of study. I started out at Moravian College as a vocal performance major, but decided later to become a mathematics major. I tried searching through the different sciences for something I loved, and I noticed that everything I liked revolved around math. People call me crazy, but I love studying and doing math all day! When I decided to make this change, the school was incredibly supportive and helpful when applying my previous classes and setting up a semester-to-semester plan of classes. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Samantha:Being a shy person, I used to have a hard time making friends. Since being at Moravian, I have found it a lot easier to meet new people. The school provides so many different opportunities to meet people that its almost difficult to not make friends! Greek life has a large presence on campus, but Im not currently involved in any. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Samantha:The Career Center is incredibly helpful! When I was trying to determine what area I wanted to study, my career advisor set me up with various job shadows to see what I enjoyed, and also put me in touch with alumni in my field of interest. The Academic Support Center has played a huge role in my success during my time at Moravian. They accommodate students any way that they can, and are always there for support when needed. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Samantha:There are many different areas to study on campus, all of which are easily accessible and have plenty of room for students. Describe the surrounding town. Samantha:Because I have been so into my studies the last year, Im actually not sure! But Main Street is constantly busy with the small shops and cute places to eat. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Samantha:Moravian College is a relatively small school. I love the size of the classes. They tend to stay around20 students or less. One of my first classes on campus only had six people. I previously went to Rutgers University where I was one student in a lecture hall of 125. You feel like a number, but with smaller classes, its more personal. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Samantha:During each fall semester, the music department takes all the music majors to New York City to see an opera at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ten Most Common Study Mistakes Improving Academic Performance Tests are part and parcel of school, and are especially important in higher education; whether it’s midterms and finals in college, language exams or massive paid exams required for certifications, tests are used to demonstrate each student’s knowledge of the material and determine whether or not they’ll pass. Studying for an adequate amount of time before taking the NCLEX is vital (ignore the nursing pun), as it has a direct impact on your final test score. However, simply setting aside a large amount of study time won’t guarantee high test scores; the effectiveness of studying is just as important as the amount of time is spent on the material. To aid the study process, here are ten common study mistakes nursing students make, and how to avoid them. #1. Studying Too Much Studying for longer tends to produce higher test scores, but there comes a point where study length begins to have an adverse effect on grades. This is especially true for nursing students, as so much of your time is tied up in working. Also, since being a nurse tends to be more stressful than, say, an accountant, the effect of too much time spent studying may exacerbate things even more. Prepping for longer than 9 hours can cause a loss in focus, failure to retain the information, and fatigue from cutting into time better spent sleepingâ€"since sleep is a commodity in the nursing world, try to get as much as possible! #2. Studying Too Soon It’s not a good idea to study a few hours before the NCLEX, even if students believe this means the information will be fresh in their minds. Studies have shown that relational memory is directly related to sleep, so the most ideal time to study is at least 24 hours before the test so you can sleep on the information. #3. Studying in One Place While students may have an ideal study location, such as a library, your bedroom, or a hospital bed that’s not taken, it’s far better to study in a few different locations. Frequent changes in environment will lead to a stronger memory of the study material, as environmental context reinforces memory. #4. Studying All Night As previously mentioned, sleep plays a vital role in your memory. All-nighters are okay every so often, but nursing students need a decent amount of sleep after study sessions in order to retain the information they stored. If you’re too pressed for time to get a good night’s sleep, try to get a power nap in at the very least. #5. Studying Only One Way It’s important to take the material students are studying and apply it in different ways. It’s important for students to read different sections out loud, transcribe notes onto paper with a pen, and quiz themselves with flashcards. If they simply memorize the study guide, instead of gaining any practical knowledge, they’ll just be able to regurgitate the study guide on a blank sheet of paper. #6. Studying on an Empty Stomach To study better, your brain needs to have the proper nutrients. Most nursing students already know of the benefits caffeine has on focus, but there are some other foods that will improve your memory and concentration, such as avocados, fish and dark chocolate. Also, find a nutritionist at your hospital and get them to give you a basic meal planâ€"this should be somewhat easy if you have good relationships with your coworkers. #7. Studying Alone Students can be prone to distraction and cause mistakes in their notes that they’ll fail to catch IF they study alone. Studying with a partner or a study group will ensure students get through material quickly, and can compare notes to ensure accuracy. #8. Studying in a Bad Mood Most students can get easily stressed out, especially as the NCLEX date approaches. As a result, that stress may cause their memory to suffer. It’s important to encourage students to relax before any study session. They could try meditation, light exercise, or breathing essential oils such as lavender and eucalyptus. Those options can soothe those nerves and clear their head. #9. Studying Without Breaks Be sure to encourage students to take frequent breaks when studying for long periods of time. An effective study schedule is the Pomodoro Technique, which recommends taking short breaks every 25 minutes of work, with longer breaks interspersed over longer periods. #10. Studying With Distractions Technology can be very helpful when studying, but it is just as likely to be detrimental due to the limitless distractions of smartphones and the Internet. Students should try turning off their phone or disabling the network connection on their computer. Without the distractions they may find it easier to concentrate and be more productive. What to Consider if You Plane on Going to Grad School Ask a Nerd! Question: I am starting my last year of college. What should I consider if I want to go to graduate school in the near future? Brief: If you have taken on the arduous but rewarding task of applying to graduate school there are a few things that can help you along the way (like one of our Orange County grad school consultants) and, as an experienced student, there are more options afforded to you. Answer There are several options for potential grad students but the first thing you should think about is when you want to go to grad school. Many students are in fields that require them to have a MA/MS or even a PhD prior to entering their professional field; however most professions offer some sort of paid work prior to earning a graduate degree. If you are choosing to work for two years or so in order to gain professional working experience in your field then your application timeline is more relaxed. Alternately, if you want to go to graduate school straight away after you receive your undergraduate degree then there are a few things that you should start right now. Step 1 Take the GRE (or LSAT or MCAT) It is better to get this test out of the way before you get too far into the application process our Irvine GRE tutors are here to help. If you are also in your senior year of undergrad, this means that you will be spending a lot of time studying. Most likely, you won’t have taken a standardized test since the good old SAT or ACT, so I recommend getting a tutor to help you get started and buying a test prep book to help you get back in the mental grove of standardized exams. Step 2 Make a list of at least 5 schools that you wish to apply to Now that you are in your 20’s, moving across the country may not be ideal. Look for programs that will get you closer to your professional goal. Although anyone can go back to school at any point in their life or career, the 20’s bring on a new set of responsibilities. There are more bills to pay and more responsibilities, along with new privileges and freedoms. Think about what your lifestyle will be like for the next 5 years or so. Are you planning to work full time from 8-5 in a traditional office environment? Are you planning to take out a loan and pay it back later? Will you be living in your current city or are you willing to move to another state? Will you be working part time or from a home office, where your schedule is relatively flexible? Are you planning to start a family or add other social responsibilities into your life in the next few years? Additional ifs to consider If you are working a traditional office environment, a blended or online program might be the right option for you. If you are planning to take out a loan, you may want to be a full time student once again and get through your program in the minimum amount of time so that you can start working full time in your field right after graduation. If you want to stay in your current city, you should look at local universities or online programs from out of state schools. If you are working part time or from a home office, you may have the flexibility to choose any of the options that suit your needs. Not dry and academic like the PC`s that were beginning to creep into everyone`s home, it seemed to offer astounding possibilities, promising the public that they could become fully immersed in computer generated worlds. We would be able to visit strange and wonderful fantasy realms, experience simulated space flight, enjoy films and computer games like never before - all this while sitting comfortably at home wearing a sophisticated display device. The reality was rather more disappointing - I can remember queuing up for hours at a busy shopping centre in central London, waiting eagerly to try the new virtual reality machine. The device was truly huge - it seemed to resemble a tank, and I can remember feeling, as I finally got to the front of the queue and stepped into the device, that I was about to have a life changing experience. Ten minutes later (and 20 poorer) I was still suffering from nausea, my stomach retching from what was a bad case of motion sickness. The problem was the technology hadn`t been perfected - the huge viewing goggles were not able to adjust in real time, so when I turned my head, it took a few seconds for the crudely rendered polygon landscape to catch up. The result was a nauseating feeling, and this was a complaint voiced by many. That seemed to be the end of virtual reality - it had a bit part in a couple of films of the period: The original Jurassic Park movie showed scientists manipulating genes at a molecular level using the fashionable technology; while the forgotten movie The Lawnmower Man had a number of extended VR scenes. Decades passed - it seemed the VR craze was just a blip, a piece of 90`s nostalgia. But in 2012 the company Oculus VR, a division of Facebook Ltd, began a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to develop their new headset. In 2016 their product was released - VR had returned! They seemed to have ironed out all the issues that halted the project 2 decades ago: thanks to more powerful and affordable computers, the irritating image lag had been overcome. How does all this relate to the education sector though? The potential for games and movies seem obvious, but could VR be used to help children in the classroom? Mark Steed, Director of the Dubai public school Jess certainly believes so. He is already trialling his idea, in which a robot with a 360 degree camera is situated at the second row of a classroom. Footage from the lesson can then be viewed in real time by anyone anywhere in the world. `When you put a headset on you feel as if you are in a classroom and it`s a very different experience from the passive idea of watching a screen, I can turn to the left and right and see the people who are in the class there,` he said. `There`s no reason with time, with increasing bandwidth and processor speed and everything, that you couldn`t have the experience of a pupil sitting anywhere in the world feeling as if they were in the classroom of one of the top schools in the world.` This all might sound rather peculiar - a classroom with a robot in attendance! Children going to school by putting on headsets, and sitting in virtual lessons! Mark Steed is aiming to reach out to the 263 million children across the globe who do not attend school. That really is an astonishing figure - more than four times the population of the United Kingdom. If these children can benefit from this technology, if they can atend (in however synthetic a form) a classroom with a well qualified teacher, that it can only be a good thing. Mr Steed recently outlined his proposal at the HMC conference in Belfast, claiming that VR headsets would enable a child in the developing world to attend a lesson in a high ranking independent school. Though this technology is unlikely at present to change the way lessons are presented in the UK, it seems certain that technology is going to have an ever more integral role in the education sector. Already lots of top universities upload many (if not all) their lectures onto youtube. In this way anyone can, from the comfort of their own home, obtain a university an education for no charge. Anything that can extend the voices of teachers to a larger audience must be good - it does indeed seem such a shame that the wisdom of so many teachers is caged within the rooms they are teaching in, their edifying words fading with the echoes. The Election of 1800 vs. The 2016 Presidential Race pexels.com Regardless of your side of the party line, the 2016 Presidential race is high stakes at best and utterly horrifying at worst. Its easy to think that weve never had an election so contentious, never any candidates so awful, and that 2016 will catalyze the fall of America. Granted, it has been a very long time since weve had such a bitter Presidential race two hundred and sixteen years, in fact. The Election of 1800, also called the Revolution of 1800, was the fourth United States Presidential Election. Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams in  a Presidential  race that makes 2016 look tame. Dont believe me? Heres what they have in common: Incumbent vs. Underdog  There may be no actual incumbent or underdog in 2016, but we do have an experienced politician running against a prominent public figure whod like for everyone to believe hes an underdog. The Election of 1800 was no different. Adams, the actual  incumbent, was running for reelection against Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, George Washingtons cabinet member, former ambassador to France, and Adams former vice president. Thats right, getting cozy with the opposing candidate  is nothing new. Two Big Names, Two Little Names  Many people forget that there were four candidates in the Election of 1800. Jefferson and Adams, much like Trump and Clinton, had the highest profiles, but Aaron Burr and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney also ran (2016s little names are Gary Johnson and Jill Stein). Rumors that libertarian  little  name  Gary Johnson might give Trump a run for his money well, before the Aleppo incident are oddly reminiscent of the way Burr nearly stole the election from Jefferson. After tying in the electoral college, the  decision was sent to the House of Representatives, who, after tying  a whopping thirty-five times, Jefferson won on the thirty-sixth ballot. Who knows? Maybe Gary Johnson can salvage his campaign and cause a similar upset. Lots of Other People Were Urged to Run The clamoring for Joe Biden and Mitt Romney to toss their hats into the ring is only an echo of the shouts for prominent politicians to intervene in the Election of 1800. The short list included George Washington, Adams predecessor, and  Alexander Hamilton, the former Treasury Secretary. Ad Hominem Attacks Ad hominem literally to the man attacks are no stranger to politics. Even so far back as the election of 1800, dirty politics played a prominent roll in campaigning. While Trump attacks Clinton over Benghazi and her emails, and Clinton attacks Trump over his remarks about women, Jefferson and Adams got a little more creative. Since open campaigning wasnt the fashion, candidates hired or befriended newspapers, other politicians, or notable men to campaign for them. Jeffersons supporters called John Adams a moral hermaphrodite and the Federalist Party tried to spread rumors that Jefferson died and Adams was the only viable candidate. So, really, attacking Clintons health and Trumps political flip-flopping is nothing new. Lots of Outside Voices If you think the 2016 election is drowning in commentary from pundits and politicians alike, the election of 1800 was worse. Because candidates bought out newspapers, political commentary and propaganda was everywhere. To top it all off, prominent men like Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and  George Washington stepped into the public square to offer their two-cents on each of the candidates. In fact, Hamilton was instrumental in getting Jefferson the candidate from the opposing party elected by the House. One Party Virtually Disowned Its Candidate Not only did Hamilton argue that Democratic-Republicans were amoral, anarchist atheists then turn around and support one in Congress but he argued that a member of his own party, John Adams, was just as bad. Hamilton lambasted Adams in the Letter from Alexander Hamilton, Concerning the Public Conduct and Character of John Adams, Esq. President of the United States, which may be read  here. Hamilton, a notorious political hothead, obliterated the only other notable member of his own party and was essential in Adams downfall. Not only that, but soon after the election of 1800, the Federalist Party crumbled. pexels.com Regardless of part affiliation or political leanings, its important to keep this incident and its consequences in mind as Reince Priebus and other notable Republicans denounce Donald Trump. It will have consequences not only for this election, but for the party in the long run.
